As the UK police force steps up their seatbelt safety campaigns ahead of the Christmas period, Parent Supermarket, the leading providers of baby products are launching a selection of car seat safety tips aimed at keeping your little ones safe this festive season.
Shocking figures indicate that car crashes kill more children aged 14 and under than anything else. This sobering fact has encouraged more and more firms to promote in car safety, especially as 82 per-cent of car seats actually purchased are not installed correctly. In 2004, a total of 24 children aged 0-11 were killed and 372 were seriously injured while travelling in a car, highlighting the need for education.
Damion Queva from the UK’s leading provider of pushchairs, prams and car seats, said, “Although car seats have been compulsory since 2005 for children under the age of 12 or less than 135 metres tall, many parents rush to install them, fail to read the instructions and fail to secure their children into them adequately, which is the cause of many unnecessary accidents.”
Parents investing in a car seat, should take heed of the warnings and ensure that:
· You always follow the manufacturer's instructions thoroughly and allow plenty of time. Parents will often rush to fit a car seat just before the school run, which can result in mistakes being made. This also applies to strapping your baby or child into the seat, and you should make sure that the seat belt clicks once fitted.
· Make sure that when you are selecting a car seat for purchase that you take your child’s weight into consideration. Car seats are designed for various weights of child. As a general rule, babies that weigh up to 13KGs face backwards and are fitted into the front or rear of the car with a seat belt.
· Child car seats are used for children aged between nine months to four years and have their own straps. These car seats face forwards and are usually fitted to the back seat with a seat belt.
· Booster seats on the other hand are for children aged between four years and 11 years, and are designed to lift them up so that the car seat belt provides adequate safety to them whilst in motion.
